Nowadays, most organisations expect candidates to undertake research prior to the interview.
Find out all you can about the organisation, including:
- Company history
- Who owns the organisation? What is the structure of the company?
- Turnover, profitability, size and office locations
- Who are its competitors?
Most of the information can be found on the company's website, corporate brochures and annual reports.
First Impressions Count
As we all know, first impressions count. The first few minutes are crucial. Make sure you follow these tips to ensure you make a great impression:
- Arrive early. Research the location prior to your interview
- Make sure you wear a suit
- SMILE and relax
- Shake hands firmly
- Maintain eye contact
Answering the Questions
The way you conduct yourself at an interview could have a drastic effect on your career projects. Listen to what the interviewer is asking and answer the questions in a clear and concise manner. If you do not understand the question ask for clarification.
Employers respect loyalty and are looking for it in potential employees. DO NOT criticise present or past employers.
Many questions can be anticipated in advance of the interview and it is always sensible to think of some answers. Frequently asked questions include:
- What are you career aspirations? Short term and long term.
- Why are you seeking new employment?
- What value can you add to our organisation?
- What does 'teamwork' mean to you?
- What do you see as your strengths and areas of improvement?
- Can you tell me about yourself?
- What salary are you looking for?
